While in Whole Foods the other day, I was intrigued by their selection of fall squash. I picked up a carnival squash (which I had no idea what it was but it was so pretty I bought it), roasted in the oven with a little brown sugar and butter (like I've done with acorn squash in the past) and had with grilled chicken—delicious!
Now that it's officially fall, it's time to take the family to go get pumpkins! I can remember going to pick pumpkins as a kid. My uncle actually had a giant pumpkin patch that we would all run through and collect as many as we could carry.
Yesterday was the first official day of fall! Hooray! Fall means pumpkins and mums and acorns and blue jeans with boots. It's my favorite time of the year and I love to deck out our house with some serious fall decor.
Jacobs loves zucchini so I am always looking for new ways to cook it. This is such a fun recipe to serve with burgers (try my turkey burgers here) or as an appetizer. I also think that it would be a great healthy alternative at a football party! Here's the recipe!
I have a slight obsession with wrapping presents. Sometimes my gifts are better on the outside than they are on the inside! Yesterday I wrapped a gift for a baby shower that I am going to this weekend for one of my dear friends and her soon-to-be-son and I thought that you might want to see how I put it together!
We recently spent a weekend in Boston and it seems like all we did was eat (much like every vacation we go on!)—days filled with oysters, lobster rolls, clam chowders and hot dogs at baseball games. Needless to say, when we got home I was ready to get back into our regular routine of healthy (and simple) eating. I love fine dinning at restaurants but honestly would rather eat a home cooked meal.
With the seasons changing, I am suddenly energized to spruce up my home. Running down Franklin's Main Street yesterday, I had to stop and peer into some of my favorite home stores for a little inspiration. Franklin is chock-full of amazing boutiques and shops that I love to frequent. These are just some of my favorite home stores on Main Street. Here's a map to help when you go!
Most nights we eat grilled chicken or fish with rice and vegetables. As the weather starts to get cooler though, I crave comfort food. Casseroles and one-pot dinners with layers of favor that warm the soul. Nothing does that quite like lasagna. It's the meal that everyone remembers their mom making growing up. It's warm, comforting and, well ... delizioso!
Nothing feels more like home and more like the weekend than pancakes. A big stack of pancakes with warm syrup, fresh fruit, a cup of coffee and some good company make for the perfect Saturday morning.
I have always loved Martha Stewart Living and have a library of back issues in my office to prove it. Looking back through them, I found a Valentine's issue from February 2002 with a chocolate meringue tort on the cover. Even back then the beauty found in something so simple, so elegant amazed me. Maybe this was the start of my magazine obsession. It definitely pushed me to love food and love styling my everyday.
With the Labor Day weekend behind us and (more importantly) Starbucks serving their Pumpkin Spice Latte, fall is upon us. The mornings are feeling cooler, the days are getting shorter and I find myself fighting the urge to dip apples in caramel and buy mums at Lowe's. I've already been looking up pumpkin flavored baking recipes in preparation!
I am a sucker for beauty products. I love samples, trying new make-up and different colors but always return to my tried-and-true favorites. These are the ones that I continually go back to.
As a little girl my grandmother (whom we affectionately call "Honey Mama") would host tea parties in her kitchen for me and my cousins. She had a small tea table and chairs that were just our size that she would set with her fine china and silver tea set. She'd bring a vase full of flowers in from her Williamsburg garden and make tea sandwiches, cheese and crackers and always had an assortment of gourmet cookies (I vividly remember Mint Milanos).
It is HOT this week! With every day in the 90's, summer doesn't seem to be going anywhere, unfortunately. This girl is ready for fall!
I've loved having The Peach Truck set up shop just down the street from my house once a week throughout the summer. Sadly, last weekend was their last for the year (a sign that summer is nearing a close). Since then, I have been working on recipes to use up all the peaches I bought—not wanting to waste even one.
What are you up to this weekend? If you haven't been out to see LIGHT: Bruce Munro at Cheekwood, GO! GO this weekend!
Macaroons are as pretty as they are sweet. I have been looking for years for the perfect ones made here in Nashville with little to no success. FINALLY they have arrived! The Painted Cupcake in Green Hills has started making the most delicious and delightfully beautiful macaroons. Their macaroon baker, Drue Madow, makes them perfectly fluffy with a crisp outer shell and a soft chewy interior (just as it should be). Her flavors change all the time and I still can't decide which is my favorite!

I'm about to reveal a HUGE secret. Listen closely because you don't want to miss this one.
Jacobs' birthday was this past week and I always make him a birthday cake. His favorite is yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Since we recently took a trip to New York, I have been inspired to make a cake that tastes like Magnolia Bakery's famous cupcakes. There is something so perfect about their cake's light sweet vanilla flavor and the buttery consistency of their icing.
